Welcome to the O’Shea Surname Blog

It is a great time to order a yDNA kit and join the O’Shea yDNA Project.

The O’Shea (also Shea) surname is found extensively in Co. Kerry and has been found there for over 1,000 years. A separate group of people bearing the surname is found in NW Co. Cork and may have been there for four hundred years or more. A third disparate group is found in counties Tipperary and Kilkenny and the surname O’Shea (also Shee) has been there for over six hundred years. Migrations from these counties causes the surname to be found in many other counties as well. Also, emigration from Ireland means the surname occurs world-wide. As Irish surnames are patrilinially inherited, our O’Shea yDNA Project is showing that these separate O’Shea groups are not connected within thousands of years and in fact they originate from different branches of the y-haplotree.

This O’Shea blogsite aims:

  • To give practical assistance to people researching their O’Shea family history,
  • To encourage communication between those with an interest in O’Shea heritage,
  • To help with genealogy and history relating to O’Sheas
  • To co-ordinate the O’Shea Surname yDNA Project at Family Tree DNA
