Welcome to the O’Shea Surname Blog

We aim to:

  • co-ordinate the O’Shea Surname yDNA Project at Family Tree DNA
  • give practical assistance to people researching their O’Shea family history,
  • encourage communication between those with an interest in O’Shea heritage,
  • help with genealogy and history relating to O’Sheas

The O’Shea (also Shea) surname is found extensively in Co. Kerry and has been found there for over 1,000 years. A separate group of people bearing the surname is found in NW Co. Cork and may have been there for four hundred years or more. A third disparate group is found in counties Tipperary and Kilkenny and the surname O’Shea (also Shee) has been there for over six hundred years.

Migrations from these counties causes the surname to be found in many other counties in Ireland. Emigration from Ireland means the surname occurs world-wide. Irish surnames are patrilinially inherited and the O’Shea yDNA Project has shown that the separate O’Shea groups, mentioned above, are not connected within thousands of years.
