For those researching Shea/OShea/Shay/Shee American ancestors a new database at Ancestry.com contains all of the passport applications
(supposedly) from 1795-1925). These documents were prepared by
the applicant and are probably more accurate than the census.
I found some very vital information concerning my maternal grandfather when he applied for a passport after living in the USA
for 40 years. The information in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census databases concerning his age were all wrong.
You can check it out at your local library.

Hi there
I am a New Zealander and for years our family have been trying to trace my paternal grandfather, Thomas (possibly second name Joseph) O’Shea who emigrated to Wellington in the 1920s, married, had two children and then abandoned them to an orphanage when his wife Minnie died. We hired a geneaologist who has done exahustive research and have also searched all UK registers but he seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. He listed his year of birth as 1900, but the place is variously Bootle, Liverpool or simply Ireland, depending which document he was filling in. He came to NZ as a seaman with a Liverpool mate called William McNicholas – who later adopted my father. (O’Shea and McNicholas married two sisters, Minnie and Primmie Joyce from Christchurch). Almost everyone involved died very young and it is all a deep mystery but we would like to know what happened to Thomas. He may have married again as he was only in his early 30s when Minnie died. He claimed to be a widower when he married Minnie, and that his first wife died in January 1924.(presumably in the UK). Since all else as failed, perhaps someone in the wider O’Shea clan has heard of him? The only other thing we know about him was that he was very tall, and possibly dark.
